Sharing what I heard in this weekend’s homily.

In the 2nd Reading of St Paul to the Ephesians, St Paul urges the divisive community of Jews and Gentiles to know that they are all one in the body of Christ. In the 1st Reading from the prophet Jeremiah, it described the leaders who had led the people astray. Once again, the Lord promised that he will gather all his people together and appoint shepherds to lead them on the right path. A day will come when a mighty king will rule with wisdom and justice.  All are fulfilled in the Gospel where Jesus came to show the way.

A good shepherd always looks after his sheep even to the extent of risking his life to save any sheep that has gone astray. He will wait patiently looking over the horizon for that one sheep to come back to the fold. At certain points in our lives, we may have gone astray. Jesus is waiting for that change of heart to welcome you back.

While we are like sheep, we can examine ourselves if we have been good sheep. Have we adopted the herd mentality to follow the path that the majority says so even tought it leads us astray? Or perhaps have we led others astray from the good shepherd?

In the course of the week, perhaps we can be a bit more conscious of how we can be good sheep. We may not possess qualities of wisdom and authority to be shepherds. All a sheep needs is an open and compassionate heart which Jesus had showed us. A heart that will bring war to peace, lies to truth, hate to love…in simple words and deeds in the course of our everyday lives.

Mt 10:26-33
Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

Jn 17:1-11a
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began. “I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.
