
I have often hear much about Taize and yet not really knowing what it was all about. Most of the information I received about Taize was that it was a form of worship in meditation. Repeating chants in deep self-meditation to bring oneself to a closer union with God. After some search, I came to learn that “Taize” was actually the name of a little village in France. It was an ecumenical community started by Brother Roger in 1940 who was then aged 25. People from all over the world congregate at Taize to participate in its community life focusing on prayer and Christian meditation. Since the death of Brother Roger in 2005, the prior of the community is Brother Alois, a German Catholic, who now leads the Taize community.

I had the opportunity to travel to Taizé earlier this year, and it is certainly worth your time to learn more about it. The experience is really life-altering, and the idea of fostering peace and reconciliation on a continent that has seen so much violence in the hands of the Church is truly inspiring.
